My New Kitchen!…in Photoshop

Today, I’ve been daydreaming.
I’ve been on a work strike since Friday. I know the weekend is over, but I worked hard last week! Scott and I went to Tampa, FL to shoot an online commercial. It was crazy, but fun. (I’ll tell you about it soon. Or your could check it out on Scott’s blog HERE.)
Today I decided to remodel my kitchen.
Well, it’s not technically my kitchen yet, but we are set to close on the house by March 15. FINGERS CROSSED!! Buying a house is no cake walk.
We are so excited to have a house. It’s like YEARS of endless projects ahead! And being someone who likes a work in progress, it’s like Christmas.
Obviously I can’t do any of the manual labor yet, so I’m dreaming. Currently, I’m leaning toward clean, but earthy design. That might change in a few days or even a few minutes, but here is what I’ve come up with so far.

STAGE 1
COUNTERTOPS : We are going to go with the wonderfully inexpensive butcher block from IKEA. I grabbed a sample from google and stretched and warped it beyond recognition, but you get the idea.
SINK : I LOVE this sink…it’s also from IKEA
FLOORS : We are putting in new hardwoods when we move in. They’re going to be a bit lighter than the current floor.

STAGE 2
I’m painting all the cabinets and ceiling white and the walls a soft gray.
STAGE 3
I want to rip off some of the cabinet doors and just have open shelving. (Can’t you just see the Cheshire cat in that one on the left?!)
I also found beautiful hardware from Anthropologie…Lurrrrv at first sight
STAGE 4
LIGHTING : I found this light fixture, but am not completely sold on it. Some kind of track lighting will be good though. I also want to add little lights under all the cabinets.
COLORS: These are the colors that I’m working with, and I might use some material (like burlap) to make a window valance.
STAGE 5
Viewing optional: this is where the vertigo might kick in.
My wainscoting got a little out of hand…
Well, that’s what I have so far. I’d love ANY comments, suggestions or ideas. I know there are amazing decorating gurus out there!
Now I will take advice from Caroll about this blog, my new kitchen, and hopefully my strike.
Begin at the beginning, and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

Nice! I like how it’s natural and crisp and clean looking at the same time. Just a word of warning–we had an Ikea butcher block piece (from one of their free-standing kitchen lines) in our apartment and it got stains SO easily. If the butcher block counter you are using is the same stuff, you’ll probably want to find a good sealant for it.

i have two words for you: urban farmhouse.
considering the fact that your new place may be neither in the city nor in the country, that might not be very helpful for you, but it’s what i’ve finally identified as my design aesthetic. your description of something “earthy but clean” made me wonder if this would be a helpful term as you continue to hone what you’re going for.
i’m very classic in my taste, but not stuffy. i like things ‘undone’… minimalist yet comfortable. neutral yet inviting. it’s so easy to evoke different landscapes through color palette & texture… i’m sure yours will turn out great. 😉 x
Yes, “urban farmhouse” sounds just right! I love modern, but I have a pretty wild girly streak in me too. To me, I love blending just a bit of country in with the straight lines. That way I can have the clean and minimal of modern with the rustic and romance of the country! Thanks for the new design term Sarah!
